Tidewatch reads each publisher’s public RSS/Atom feed. Headlines and excerpts belong to their publishers. Each card links to the original article.

  • Balanced by default. Many aggregators leave out Africa and Latin America. Here the default order takes one story from each region in turn and shows at most 6 stories per feed and 12 per publisher, so no single outlet or region floods the page. Choose “Newest first”, a source or a search to see every story by date.
  • Regions describe a feed’s editorial focus, not where the publisher is based. Stories in other languages are tagged with their language. When the news Worker serves the page, their headline and excerpt are machine-translated to English (Workers AI, m2m100), with the original one click away. “Read in English” opens the full article through Google Translate.
  • Topics are tagged automatically from whole-word keywords, so they can be wrong.
  • Duplicates. The same story from several outlets (same link, same headline, or a near-identical headline within 72 hours) is shown once, with the other outlets under “Also in”.
  • On the map links appear when a headline names something Tidewatch maps, such as coral bleaching, deforestation or sea level.
  • Caching. Feeds are cached on the server, refreshed every 4 hours, and kept on disk across restarts. If a publisher’s feed fails, its last good headlines are kept for up to 48 hours and marked below.
